A Rare Bowl from Norwegian Ceramic History
This beautiful bowl was crafted by Jens von der Lippe (1911–1990), one of the pioneers of Norwegian studio ceramics. Von der Lippe ran his own workshop in Skøyen, Oslo from 1933, working closely with his wife Margrethe — he at the potter's wheel, she handling design and decoration.
The von der Lippe couple has been described as "the pioneers of Norwegian studio ceramics, paving the way for a new era of modern craft — where the artist carries out the entire process from idea to finished product."
About the Artist
- Trained at the Norwegian National College of Art and Design and the Staatliche keramische Fachschule in Bolesławiec, Germany
- Study residency at the Instituto statale d'Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza, Italy (1957–58)
- Held some of Norway's first dedicated ceramics exhibitions in the 1950s
A bowl like this is more than a functional object — it is a piece of Norwegian art history.
